Safety Tips
Do’s and Dont’s For Buy and Sell Online Money Authenticity
- Be cautious of users who make unrealistic requests, for instance, if a buyer claims that he/she can send a cheque or money order for an amount larger than the asking price.
- Always check the authenticity of the currency when receiving payment in cash.
- To protect yourself from being scammed, avoid money orders, cashier checks and wire transfers, also never transfer funds to pay someone in advance. Always pay after receiving the item.
Secure Meetings
- To verify someone’s identity, it is advisable to look them up online or give them a phone call before setting up a meeting. Be wary of users who avoid giving you their phone number.
- Check the condition of the item, price and mode of payment before meeting in person. Move on to a different seller if a user doesn’t offer clear details about the item being sold.
- Always choose a safe place where people gather in large numbers, like a coffee shop or shopping mall, for meeting in person. Be wary of those who avoid meeting you face-to-face.
Verification & Validation
- Examine the item and check whether it matches the seller’s description before completing the transaction.
- Be cautious of items sold at unreasonably low prices.
- Reject or make note of the deal if the mode of payment has been changed from what was agreed in the contract.
Privacy and Confidentiality
- Never give out personal financial information while making a purchase.
- For larger items, you may have to meet a buyer/seller at home. In these cases, it would be advisable to have someone else with you. It is safer to have the items placed in the waiting room or storeroom or any open place than inside your private living space.
- Make sure your photos don’t reveal any additional information in the background. Focus only on the item on sale.
